Chief are Evan Koga, Mike Moonves, and brothers Danny and Michael Fujikawa. Born and raised in Los Angeles. They signed last year to Domino Records (label for Arctic Monkeys, Wild Beasts and She & Him) and have their debut LP coming out on June 21st.
Chief are playing at Hotel Utah on June 8th. From the little I’ve listened to them, it seems like one of those shows where you’ll back in a few years and not believe you saw them in such a small venue…
If you’re staying in San Francisco for Memorial Day Weekend it should be worth going to check out the Austin indie rock band Voxtrot. They are playing at the Great American Music Hall on May 29th.
Although the band has only been around 2003 this is actually their farewell tour. In a long letter on the band’s website, frontman Ramesh Srivastava lays out the reasons for the band’s dissolution: “The career path of Voxtrot was truly one of long, simmering build, explosion, and almost instantaneous decay. Slowly, I am learning to replace any feelings of regret with positive memories of how amazing the whole thing was, and how it has, in an unexpected way, fortified my character.”
We Are Scientists are by far one of my favorite bands. Not only for their amazing music, but for Keith Murray and Chris Cain’s comedic value. They had their own tv series with MTV UK and are often hilarious guest interviewers at the NME Awards (worth checking out on youtube).
We Are Scientists are set to release their third album Barbara on June 15th. Not plans yet to tour in the Bay Area, but hopefully something will be scheduled soon. Check out their newest songs, Nice Guys and Rules Don’t Stop.
The name of this band is not representative of the music. It is the brainchild of Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and more recent, Them Crooked Vultures and his childhood friend Jesse Hughes. The story behind the name is that when Jesse played the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was death metal, Homme called them “The Eagles of death metal”.
Eagles of Death Metal are coming to Mezzaine on June 19th for a free show. Of sorts. The show is being sponsored BC Northern Lights and tickets are free if you purchase a cannabis product from them. Check out the web site or call 1-888.236.1266.
If you don’t want to purchase a product, Eagles of Death Metal are playing at Santa Cruz’s Catalyst on June 18th.
Either way, it is a show that shouldn’t missed – Fillmore show was one of the best I’ve seen in the last few years…
Hot Hot Heat will be having a Los Angeles residency in June – performing a show at Bootleg Theater every Wednesday in June in support of upcoming release Future Breeds. In between these show they will be playing Popscene on June 24. The last time I saw Hot Hot Heat in San Francisco they sold out the Fillmore so seeing them at 330 Ritch should be treat.
A sign that summer is almost here… Outside Lands tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am. There will be a limited number of what they are calling “2-Day Eager Beaver tickets” available for only $115. Only hitch is that you have to wait until June 1st for the line-up.
The festival is confirmed for August 14-15, 2010 in Golden Gate Park. This year’s festival will only be two days and benefits the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department.
